Last weekend Shirts for a Cure was to be a vendor at the 2005 Hellfest held in Trenton, NJ. Shirts were ordered, rooms were reserved and a truck was rented - then - days before the event was to take place - it all came crumbling down. Details are still sketchy about what really happened - one camp says the official venue asked for an additional insurance policy to be added at the last minute and the other camps says the guarantees for the bands was just way too high for the amount of tickets being sold. Regardless of the reason, Hellfest was cancelled and SSE was set to loose a significant amount of money.

Enter Margie Alban of Do-It Booking and Kate Hiltz of the Bouncing Souls. Within moments of Hellfest being cancelled they were working the phones, reserving venues and halls all over the Philly/South Jersey area. By Friday morning they had booked a three-night event that will not be forgotten by any who were in attendance. SSE was lucky enough to be invited along to set up and sell shirts at each event.

Over the weekend, we unveiled three new designs (The Loved Ones, Paint It Black and Kid Dynamite) and sold more the 350 shirts.

THANK YOU to Margie and Kate for their dedication to this music we all love and for their tireless effort in producing a weekend that will not be forgotten any time soon.

SSE Summer 2005

Greetings from Baltimore,

As summer winds down, I would like to take a moment to update you on what we have been doing. On June 15th we started the odyssey called The Vans Warped Tour as an official vendor - selling our shirts to kids all over the country. In the months that followed, we went to nearly every continental state, traveled over 10,000 miles, watched countless bands perform to hundreds of thousands of kids, braved 112 degree heat in Arizona, fought the rains of Florida, survived the sun of California, enjoyed the hospitality of the east coast and made friends all over the country. In the end, we sold more the 8,000 shirts raising over $120,000 - breaking all previous SSE sales and fundraising records.

Thank you to all who stopped by the booth to see what we were offering or to just say "hi". Thanks to all the people who helped us along the way - be it with a spare zip-tie or the use of their chase car for a much needed Taco Bell run. Thanks to Thrice, Strike Anywhere, The Explosion and Motion City Soundtrack for their constant support, friendship and on-stage mentions of Shirts for a Cure. A very special thanks to Gerard, Mikey, Ray, Frankie, Bob, Worm, Cortez, Jeff P, Supa Dave, Holland, Kate, Lisp and Brian of My Chemical Romance for donating a bunk spot to me and for hauling our shirts around the country. And lastly, thank you to Katie Brown and Patrick Martin for working every show, enduring the best and worst of what Warped and SSE had to offer. What we do is not be possible without the constant dedication of these people and bands - THANK YOU!

The fall is gearing up to be another busy one for us. Be on the look out for info on Team SSE Milwaukee for the Race For The Cure. Watch for us on the My Chemical Romance fall tour and stay tuned for an announcement on our next donation.

The sun smiled brightly on Team SSE and the 60,000 other participants in this year's National Race for The Cure held in Washington, D.C. this past Saturday. Walking at the mellow pace of 2.9 kilometers per hour, the 40+ Team SSE members took to the sunny streets of DC, raising eyebrows and making a bit of a splash with our stunning new team shirts and great new signs. Thanks to everyone who came out to support us, it was great to see so many new faces mixed in with the SSE faithful. Thanks to the crews from New York and New Jersey for making the trek south and a special thanks to our local chapter for encouraging so many new people to join us. And an extra special thanks to Matt Michel for designing this year's amazing new team shirt, it was by far the best shirt we saw all day and it generated quite a lot of attention. Take a moment to peak at a couple of images (here) and stay tuned for the next SSE event.

Lace up your walking shoes and get ready for this year's National Race for the Cure in Washington D.C. on June 4. This year in an effort to raise more money for SSE and encourage more people to walk with us, we will not be registering an official team with Komen but will still walk as a team. By not registering with Komen, SSE cuts down on costs, thereby lowering this year's registration fee to only $20!

More then 500 kids packed the basement of the First Unitarian Church on April 24th, 2005 to experience a rare small-venue performance by The Bouncing Souls. The evening started off with high-energy performances by The Ratchet and Let It Burn. After a slight technical delay, The Loved Ones hit the stage with an emotionally charged rendition of "Drastic" then blazed through a powerful set of tunes. The Explosion came next and did not disappoint - from the first note of "No Revolution" to the last bit of feedback of "Tarantulas", including their version of "Seeing Red" - they made sure everyone had the time of their lives. At 9:45 pm The Bouncing Souls climbed on stage and showed the kids why they are considered the old guard of punk, playing songs from every era of their 18 year long career. Highlights included a guest performance by David Wagenschutz on drums during "Headlights Ditch" and a crowd-pleasing rendition of "True Believers" featuring Dave Hause and Sound Man Bob on second and third guitar. After all was said and done, SSE was able to raise a little over $7,000. Thanks to The Bouncing Souls, The Explosion, The Loved Ones, Let It Burn, The Ratchets, David Wagenschutz, Nicholas, Margie, Andy Pants, Sean Agnew and R5. A very special thanks to K8 Hiltz for her impeccable sense of style and her dedication to organizations like SSE - without her none of this would have been possible. She truly is one of the great ones.

The Third Annual SSE Charity Dinner last Saturday night was a resounding success. More then 60 people were treated to a stunning array of Italian specialties including tomato vodka gnocchi, roasted rosemary chicken and a tiramisu to die for. After dinner and dessert, guests watched a multimedia presentation that included a video highlighting many of 2004's events and an overview of the events from 2004 and what is planned for 2005. It was a great way to celebrate everything SSE accomplished in 2004 and to announce what 2005 holds. Thanks to everyone who attended this year's event, with a special thanks to those who traveled from NYC, Austin, Minneapolis, Pennsylvania, and Los Angeles - it was good to see so many familiar faces and to get to know many new SSE supporters.

The Syrentha Savio Endowment awards the Los Angeles Free Clinic $25,000.

March 3, 2005

SSE awarded the Los Angeles Free Clinic a $25,000 grant to help fund it's breast cancer screening and education programs. The Los Angeles Free Clinic has been helping impoverished and underprivileged women in the greater Los Angeles area since the mid 1960's, screening and educating thousands each year. We feel this grant will enable the clinic to nearly double their efforts in the areas of the city that need the most care.

After touring the clinic facilities and meeting with Stephanie Thomas, Director of Development, and her team of doctors and nurses, SSE is confident that the grant money will make a real difference among women in the community of the greater Los Angeles area.

Once again, thank you to all of you who have made it possible for SSE to award such grants. In three short years we have been able to change the lives of many women on both coasts.

Though we are small - we have a loud footstep

2004 Baltimore, MD Race for the Cure

The 2004 Race For A Cure season came to an end for Team SSE on Saturday in Baltimore, MD. With more than 25 team member, including some from as far away as Minneapolis and NYC, we had a strong showing for this yearÌs stroll through Charm City. Despite some confusion with the route and traffic and a bit of a chill in the air, Team SSE crossed the finish line in just over an hour and a quarter making our last walk of the year one of our quickest. Thanks to all who joined us, with a special thanks to Brittany Markovich for helping organize a large group of her family and friends.

2004 Orange County, CA Race for the Cure

As the sun burned off the early morning haze, more then 400 SSE team members breached the starting line to begin the 2004 Orange County Race For The Cure. Winding our way through the palm-lined streets of Newport Beach, our largest team to date made quite an impression. Less then an hour and a quarter later we were crossing the finish line to huge cheers from race organizers and the gathered crowd. After a quick trip to the SSE booth for a sip of water and to sign the banner, the team scattered to rest up for the second part of this epic day.

Seven hours later we found ourselves in Anaheim's Chain Reaction nightclub for a special performance by Thrice. After raffling off a ton of amazing goodies, Dustin, Riley, Eddie and Teppei took the stage by force. Blazing through 22 songs, including some they have never played before and one or two they will never play again, the audience felt they were experiencing something special.

Thanks to all who made this event one for the ages -- especially our crew of volunteers (Whitney, Tom, Jamie, Molly, Lindsay, Ashley, Theresa, Bridget, Lindy and Vanessa) who helped at check-in and kept the morning running smoothly. Thanks to Dustin, Riley, Eddie and Teppei for their dedication to this event, and to SSE in general. And lastly, thanks to all who participated in this event. You truly have made a difference.

The sun shined, spirits soared and Team SSE had its best showing in New York City to date. With many returning members and a new contingent from Sarah Lawrence University, Sunday September 12th saw 30+ Team SSE members take to Manhattan for this yearÌs Race For The Cure. Looping up Central Park West and through the park, the route took us past the reservoir, the Great Lawn, the Ramble, Strawberry Fields and ended next to Sheep Meadow. Good conversation and a brisk pace help us finish the walk with a breakneck time of one hour and 43 minutes. Thanks for all who came out and made this yearÌs Team SSE NYC the best yet. With more then 725 people in attendance, the third SSE charity concert was full of excitement, fund raising and surprises. The evening kicked off with an emotional set from The Routineers. Having just lost her mother days earlier to Emphysema, Amanda MacKaye (lead singer) found the fortitude and strength to climb onto the stage at the Black Cat and give the audience a performance they will not soon forget. Majority Rule hit the stage next; bring the show to a whole new level of energy. Playing their last show as Majority Rule, this foursome left the audience broken and begging for more. After a quick change over, Darkest Hour exploded onto the stage and gave a new meaning to the word ÎintenseÌ. Flying through a mix of old favorites and new classics, DH gave itÌs all and made sure that everyone in the room knew why they were there. The surprise of the evening came in the form of a somewhat-reunited Damnation a.d. Mike Mcternan and Ken Olden took the stage together for the first time in five years and treated the audience to their brand of heavy. Backed by members of Darkest Hour and Majority Rule, the two hardcore veterans seemed to be at the peak of their games. After everything was said and done the audience left feeling fulfilled and SSE raised over $5000. Thanks to everyone who helped make this a memorable night. A special thanks goes out to Mike Schleibaum, Matt Michel, Amanda MacKaye, Minu & Kimi Aghevli, Ben Green and Brian McTernan.

Here is the re-cap for last Sunday's RFTC in Minneapolis - brought to you by Paul Herzing

"The Minneapolis Team SSE was small but spirited. Participation was probably hindered by the Mother's Day holiday and memories of last year's cold, rainy trudge. (Some are still suffering from PTSS after the 2003 walk.) But what we lacked in attendance we made up for with elan, the best looking t-shirts in the crowd, and enough guile to weave our way through a rowdy crowd of 47,000 walkers. Christine Lehman generously fed the team (plus some late arrivals) after the walk.

It appears we've solved our weather problem. SSE Storm Control Center managed to hold off any trace of rain until almost twelve hours after we finished (at which point the skies over the Twin Cities opened up like Angel Falls). Now we're turning our attention to team size. Our goal for 2005 is to break into double digits for the SSE Minneapolis team. So mark your calendars now: we're officially renaming Mother's Day, "SSE Day [plus mothers]".

With a swift pace of 2.67 miles per hour, Team SSE Atlanta finished the first Race For The Cure of the season in just over an hour. The 11 Team SSE members enjoyed a beautiful Saturday morning and briskly strolled through Midtown Atlanta with 11,000 other participants in this yearÌs RFTC. Hotlanta played great host to this yearÌs Team SSE RFTC season kick-off by providing some beautiful weather, a great brunch and a decent sized SSE team. I hope that the rest of the RFTC season runs as smoothly and is as enjoyable. Thanks to everyone who came out and especially Lee and Nathanial Beers for organizing the team.

Last Saturday I attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Capital Breast Care Center (CBCC). The CBCC is a free clinic in Southeast Washington, D.C.; one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in the country, and will focus on reducing breast cancer disparities among city residents.ÜThe mission of the CBCC is to reduce breast cancer mortality among medically underserved women in the community through state-of-the-art education, screening, diagnosis and treatment Ò regardless of ability to pay Ò in a comfortable, convenient location.

SSE has agreed to help pay for the treatment portion of the CBCC.

After a brief word from Mayor Anthony Williams, I was given the grand tour of the new facility. The whole facility has a Îjust out of the boxÌ feel to it, yet at the same time, a very warm and inviting atmosphere. The mammogram machine is top of the line with a well-experienced operator. With a dedicatedÜstaff of five, including two MDÌs, I feel that this is a perfect place to start using SSE money.

It was so great to see that we are really making a difference.

Thank you everyone for your constant support of SSE

Let the race season begin!

Team SSE registration is officially open for the Atlanta (May 8th) and Minneapolis (May 9th) Race for the Cures. We are looking forward to returning to Minneapolis and are very excited about adding Atlanta to our tour of RFTC cities.

Each year, Team SSE participates in as many Race for the Cure events as time will allow. Though the walks are not big fundraisers for SSE, they raise our profile and make people aware of who we are and what we are doing. The more people we make aware of our cause, the more women we will be able to help. Fielding a substantial team in each city is an important part of building our profile.

Please do not let the word ÎraceÌ scare you. Team SSE participates in the 5K walk in all cities, allowing us to include as many people as possible, regardless of athletic ability or stamina.

This year, we are offering two methods of registration. You may register by hand and send us a check or you may use your credit card online and let us take care of all the paper work. Choose whichever method suits you best.

If you which to join Team SSE in either city, please follow the links below and sign-up early and often.

The Second Annual Syrentha Savio Endowment Charity Dinner held this past Saturday was a resounding success. More then 70 people gathered at Maggiano's Little Italy Restaurant in Washington, D.C. to enjoy an evening of food, wine and fundraising. The evening included a wine and martini bar, a family style Italian banquette, a decadent array of dessert choices and was highlighted by the unveiling of the 2003 events video presentation. SSE is in the beginning stages of forming a team of women (and men) who are willing to grow their hair 10 or more inches in order to cut it and donate it to the Locks of Love (LOL) organization. LOL is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under the age of 18 years suffering from long-term medical hair loss.

Last year, Marcia Applegate and Karin Eanes raised over $1,700 for SSE when they donated 22 inches of hair to Locks of Love. To learn more about last years donation Click here

Once the team is formed, we will be looking for people to sponsor our team members. If you are interested in joining the team, please contact me HERE. and I will send you more detailed information. As an added bonus, each team member will receive a limited edition Team LOL/SSE shirt to wear on cutting day

Two-thousand-and-three was a great year for The Syrentha Savio Endowment (SSE). The year saw a couple of firsts for SSE: our first charity concert, our first charity dinner, our first partnership with a band, and our first press in a national magazine. We have nearly tripled the size of the Endowment, growing from under $39,000 in December 2002 to over $115,000 by the end of December 2003. We finalized our board of trustees and were granted tax-exempt status. And, most importantly, we have continued to honor and cherish the memory of Syrentha.

None of this would have been possible without your help and support. Thank you if you participated in one of our many events, if you made a donation to the Endowment or if you joined our mailing list.

If you thought 2003 was fun, just wait for the 2004 SSE events. Many of the same events are planned and a few new and exciting ones. So, fasten your seat belts and I'll see you some time in 2004.

On December 17th the House of Blues on Sunset Strip in Hollywood, CA was the scene of the second Syrentha Savio Endowment charity concert and I feel confident in saying that most, if not all, of the 1100 people in attendance enjoyed the remarkable performances. The show opened with a stunning set from Moments in Grace. Recently signed to Salad Days Records, this Florida quartet made believers out of any who watched them. Minus The Bear hit the stage next Ò for those in the audience who had never experienced the magic of Minus the Bear, this was truly a thrilling evening. Thrice finished off the night and played a 20 song set list that included many old favorites and rarities. It was quite a performance. With so much great music being played over the course of the night it was easy to forget why we were all there. In the end, SSE walked away with nearly $12,000 in donations.

I would like to thank the following people:

Eddie, Riley, Dustin and Teppei from Thrice
Erin, Jake, Corey, Dave and Matt from Minus the Bear
Justin, Jake, Jeremy and Tim from Moments in Grace
Brian McTernan
Nick and Ken from New Noise
Nick T and Bob from Thrice tour management
Collin from Cinder Block
Dawn from House of Blues
Shadlie, Jenna and Theresa
Geoff from TDT Printing
Matt and Alan
Our sponsors Nike, Atticus, Jade Tree, Ben Sherman, Ambiguous, One Inch Round, Bloom Printing, Vestal, Sundog and Line 6

On the evening of November 6th, eight foodies and SSE members were treated to a night to remember at Citronelle in Washington, D.C. Sitting at the Chef's Table in the kitchen, the ÏCitronelle EightÓ experienced a rare glimpse into the inner workings of one of WashingtonÌs highest-rated restaurants. We enjoyed a twelve-course feast that included foie gras, lobster, and herb-encrusted halibut. Some fabulous French wines were served and the whole evening was capped off by an amazing assortment of sweets and dessert wines. We left satiated and content and SSE walked away with just under $1000. Click (HERE) for photos.

The palm trees and clouds made the 2003 Orange County Race for the Cure a memorable day for the 60+ SSE/Thrice Team members who gathered this past Sunday. With a wide variety of ages and with team members coming from all over the country, some from as far away as NYC and Stockton, CA, this yearÌs team showed great promise for future years.

The race, which wound us around and through most of Fashion Island, Newport Beach, was finished in a little over one hour and sixteen minutes - a new record for Team SSE. After the race and the requisite trip through Ïfreebie village,Ó we headed off to Sergeant PepperoniÌs to stuff ourselves on pizza and soda.

Thanks to everyone who came out and made this a day to remember. Thanks also to Eddie, Dustin, Riley, Teppei, Nick, Jenna and Theresa; none of this would have been possible without you and your support. And last, but most definitely not least, thank you to Shadlie Kensrue for all of her tireless work and support getting this event together. She was able to do all the hands-on work in Orange County and still keep up with her studies.

Take a look at these photos from the race (HERE) and stay tuned for our next SSE event.

The theme of Race for the Cure this year has been "rain". So far only the San Francisco event took place in the dry. But the SSE Team in Milwaukee got lucky: although cold wind and rain probably kept quite a few of our 40-person team at home, the weather cleared before the walk began. We were slowed somewhat by mud puddles, but finished in 1 hour, 20 minutes. Half an hour later the skies opened up, but by then our mission was accomplished. Stay tuned for images from the walk.

09.16.03

The rain and wind stopped just in time for Team SSE to enjoy a leisurely stroll through Central Park in last weekend's New York City RFTC. Despite mass confusion over where to actually start the race, the 20 Team SSE members, including 2 on roller blades, utterly enjoyed themselves. I would like to thank everyone who came out to support us, including the Brooklyn crew, the Mid-Town mavens and the contingency from DC and points south. Check out the images from the walk (HERE)

The seven San Francisco SSE Team members were greeted by a beautiful sunny Sunday morning for this year's SF Race For The Cure. This yearÌs walk highlighted the beauty of the Bay Area by routing the walk through Crissy Fields and under the Golden Gate Bridge. All who attended enjoyed the walk, the conversation and the atmosphere. Thanks to all who joined us. Take a moment out of your day to gander a look at the pictures (HERE) from this amazingly beautiful area. Stay tuned for details on this weekendsÌ NYC and Milwaukee walks.

Those of us in attendance at last Saturday night's SSE/Frederick Keys game were treated to quite an event. Despite being on the losing end of a 6-0 score, the Keys played well and the sold-out crowd really enjoyed the game. Once the final out was made, the crowd sat back and watched a very impressive 20-minute firework display.

Thanks to all who attended the game, I had a great time and we managed to raise more than $400 for the endowment.
